ASICs are not like a software project – you don't just keep iterating until you get it right. A small mistake anywhere along the chain can mean totally useless parts and delays of months – not to mention huge costs to re-spin chips. This means you need to hire expensive ASIC engineers ($15K/mo on contract) and lease VERY expensive software ($20K/mo) to verify your design correctly.

BTW, the BTCFPGA team announced in the forums that they are still looking for someone to help them fab this supposed chip. They can't possibly know what they are getting themselves into, nor what it will cost… Please everyone – CAVEAT EMPTOR…
